Overview: Often overshadowed by the osseous management of open fractures, the soft tissue component of open fractures becomes the focus for this three-part series. Part One will cover the topics of optimizing pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative management of soft tissues. Part Two is a Journal Club offering in-depth review of high impact soft tissue and infection prevention management strategies with the articles behind them. Part Three is a case-based Fireside Discussion with experts discussing tissue management strategies for varying levels of complexity and closure, with a focus on decision-making for when to keep going and when to proceed to flap coverage.

Expected results of AONA's CME activities for surgeons, fellows, and residents are to:
• Increase their knowledge base and surgical skill level
• Improve competence by applying advances of knowledge in patient care in the areas of trauma, degenerative disorders, deformities, tumors, and reconstructive surgical techniques
• Address practice performance gaps by improving management of aspects of traumatic injuries and musculoskeletal disorders (i.e., pre-operative planning to post-operative care)
- The participant will connect pre-operative management directly to intra- and post-operative success for their open fracture patients.
- The participant will incorporate current evidence-based solutions to select closure techniques that reduce complications
- The participant will differentiate between those soft tissue wounds that can be handled themselves, and which ones need flap coverage.
